Decades on, memories as fresh as ever

MARVELLOUS memories will come flooding back for members of Braybrook's champion football and cricket sides of the late 1970s at a special reunion at the Pennell Reserve on Sunday, June 28.

The Braybrook Sporting Club ruled the roost.

Braybrook Cricket Club's first XI, captain-coached by Ron Roach, was crowned A turf premiers in the old Sunshine Cricket Association in 1978-79.

The Braybrook Football Club wasn't to be outdone. Its senior side won the A grade premiership under captain-coach George Bisset in the old Footscray District Football League in '79. The club's reserves had won the flag in '78.

Cold beer is certain to be flowing as the champs of the day recall those glory days.

Footy legend Barry 'The Claw' Priest can't contain his excitement at the prospect of catching up with his great mates of yesteryear.

"It's going to be great day. I'm really looking forward to it, very much so," he said. "It'll be the first time we've done '79."

Priest fondly recalled Gary 'Tex' Tilton grabbing a telling mark in the last line of defence in the dying seconds as Braybrook pipped St Albans by one point in a thrilling grand final at Skinner Reserve. "He was right on the goal line when he took the mark. It was just unbelievable," he said.

The side was pumped to be in the grand final after celebrating a miraculous win over Sunshine YCW in the preliminary final after trailing by 37 points at three-quarter time.

Braybrook had to dig deep to win the cricket premiership as well.

Roach recalled his side losing three early wickets in the grand final against arch rival Albion at Dempster Park after he'd won the toss and batted.

But Roach and Don Pacholli joined forces to add about 150 runs for the fourth wicket in a match-winning partnership.

Pacholli top-scored with a fighting 90 and Roach made 77 as the side made 240-odd.

Opening bowlers Bruce Ellis and Gary Newman really bent their backs as Albion was bundled out for 148.

Roach and his players were determined to win after being routed on a wet wicket by Albion in the grand final the previous season.

"My word we were," he said.
