CAPTAIN-coach Shamus Robertson is determined to lead by example as Sunshine United shoot for the finals in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association's North Division this summer.
The one-time Footscray Edgewater Victorian Premier Cricket all-rounder is a genuine matchwinner.
The left-arm orthodox spinner captured 5-7 from 4.4 overs in an extraordinary performance to spearhead his side to a convincing win over Hoppers Crossing in a one-dayer at Hogans Road Reserve in the recent second round.
The sixth bowler used, Robertson was unstoppable as he spun up a storm as the home side collapsed from 4-100 to 112 all out in pursuit of 5-161.
The visitors reached 1-21 in their second innings.
Robertson played down his performance.
"I came on pretty late in the day. The damage was done by the opening bowlers [Tim McGrath and Bill Blair]," he said. No. 3 batsman Michael Ashton also played a starring role, scoring 82 not out.
He's a one-time Footscray Edgewater second XI player.
Big things are expected from wicketkeeper-batsman Shaun Buttigieg-Clarke, who played for North Melbourne's second XI last season.
Robertson loves his style.
Buttigieg-Clarke is a fine all-round sportsman - he played an important role on the forward-line in Deer Park's stunning premiership win in the Western Region Football League's division 2 competition this year.
Robertson urged his players to keep working hard.
"I know it's cliched, but we really are just taking it one game at a time. If we get ahead of ourselves, we'll collapse in a heap.
"We've done some really big things in the preseason.
"Hopefully, the rewards will come our way."
