WESTERN Spirit cricketer Tim McGrath was left speechless as his teammates took a run off the last ball to win the U18 Commonwealth Bank Cup at the MCG.
After initially thinking they had lost the match, McGrath, who lives in Caroline Springs, was shocked at the result.
"I'm still speechless and can't believe that we won the match," said McGrath.
"I thought we had lost as our batsman missed the ball and thought the game was over.
"We were lucky that the wicketkeeper fumbled and the guys were able to scamper through for the winning run."
For the Spirit the win capped off an amazing day, not only winning their first championship, but getting to play on the MCG.
"It was pretty amazing playing on the MCG, just the feeling of walking out there was special," McGrath said.
McGrath, 17, bowled five overs in the final conceding 22 runs without taking a wicket, after taking five wickets at 28.8 during the rest of the tournament.
For McGrath, who plays for Sunshine United in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north division, the tournament provided the opportunity to regain some form.
"I didn't play too bad and it's a good competition to play in.
"I have been playing pretty ordinary at United this season, so to get a bit of form is good."
While looking at finishing the season well with United, McGrath is also looking at playing in the Premier division.
"Hopefully I can get a spot with one of the district sides," McGrath said.
"I've played a few one-dayers and Twenty20 with Footscray Edgewater, so hopefully I can get a spot with them."
