Frustrated Blues have the hunger

09 Feb, 2010 04:18 AM
KEILOR is out to erase the 'so near, yet so far' tag that has stalked it in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division since winning back-to-back flags in 2002-03 and '03-04.

Matt Willmott has coached the Blues in a string of heartbreaks and is keen to deliver a flag this summer.

"We're hungry to go all the way," he said.

"There have been a few near misses and for me I want to get another one before the end of my time."

The Blues are firmly entrenched in the top four.

They are undefeated since round one but still battling for a home semi-final.

"It's been frustrating," Willmott said.

"We've played well, lost just one game and find ourselves in third position.

"Last round we had a big win against McKinnon, looked at the ladder to find out we dropped down a place."

If ever there was a three-horse race in the senior division, it is this season.

Yarraville Club, Airport West-St Christophers and Keilor will battle it out for the home semi-finals - all-important should rain intervene.

"Everyone wants to play home finals," Willmott said.

"But I don't see any reason

why we can't win away from home."

Keilor's strength is its ability to bat and bowl deep into its line-ups and not having an over-reliance on individuals to get the job done.

Keilor's one out-and-out star is former Essendon district all-rounder Jody Hutchinson, and he is living up to the promise.

Hutchinson has taken 23 wickets at 12.4 and added a valuable 213 runs at 23 in the middle order.

"He's the premier bowler in the competition, bowls long spells consistently taking wickets and is making runs at No. 6," Willmott said.

The emergence of second-year opener Shaun Guerra has been immense.

The youngster has not taken his eyes off the ball since guiding the VTCA north under-21 team to the Wright Shield tier 2 title.

If Guerra, who sits 15th in the division for runs, can finish the summer with a bang, his side will be a better chance of winning the premiership.

Last summer, he finished with three consecutive ducks including in the semi-final against the West Saints, but he is unlikely to be overawed second time around.

"He's having a really good year," Willmott said.

"This second year he's really kicked along and, if anything, he's come on more than we would have hoped for."

Willmott proceeds to reel off a list of other important players, including Jamie Sheahan, Lucas Bugeja, James McKay and Chetan Arjun, and you start to work out it is the team that counts at the Keilor Oval.
