Crows yet to face a ball as rain does it again

03 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
SUNSHINE'S top-order batting line-up can't take a trick.

The Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association's south-west group's season is already five weeks old and the Crows have yet to take guard.

Incredible, but true.

It's frustrating for the likes of Troy Stone, Jonathon Blake, Warren Suares and Daniel Greenwood.

The tale of woe continued on Saturday when play was called off on day two of the side's game against Williamstown at Point Gellibrand Oval.

The sun was blazing, but the pitch and outfield were unplayable due to the driving rains on Friday.

The visitors were chasing an imposing 2-299 though.

It was a case of deja vu for the side.

Rain had washed away Sunshine's chances against Elsternwick at Dempster Park in the previous round.

The Crows were chasing 7-192, but didn't get an opportunity to bat.

Add the abandonment of the scheduled season opener one-dayer against Ormond at EE Gunn Reserve and it's easy to see why there's so much frustration among the likes of Stone and Co.

Sunshine will be hoping for a lot more luck with the weather when it hosts

Yarraville in a two-dayer at Dempster Park over the next two Saturdays.

There was play in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association's Senior Division blockbuster between top-two aspirants Keilor and Spotswood at McLean Reserve.

The visitors had the home team on the ropes at 7-117 and then 9-161, but were left slightly frustrated when the score advanced to 203.

They will resume on 0-1, but will have to bat carefully against the pace of the experienced Ashley Robertson and Damian Aston.

In north division, Sunshine United is in a strong position against Keilor Park at Selwyn Park.

The home side hit up 9-229 declared, with captain-coach Shamus Robertson top-scoring with 82 at No. 4.

He added 108 for the fifth wicket with Shaun Buttigieg-Clarke, who made 66 at No. 6.

Experienced medium pacer Bill Blair bagged 3-10 late in the day as the visitors limped to 3-13 at stumps.

Play between Sunshine Druids and Westmeadows at Willowbrook Reserve was washed out.

In North A1, Albion struggled to 159 against Moonee Valley, which is 3-97 in reply at Bruce Reserve.

Play was cancelled in games between

St Albans and Werribee Centrals at Galvin Park No. 1 Oval and Taylors Lakes and Avondale Heights at Canning Street Reserve.

In the Williamstown and District Cricket Association's Aturf, Grand United skittled Gellibrand for 83 at Parsons Reserve.

The Gorillas hit up 4-169 in reply and will press for a second successive outright win.
