Stayin' alive

MOVELLE Primary School went back to where it all began last week.

Pupils dressed in retro clothes and blew out the candles on a massive cake last Tuesday to celebrate the StAlbans school's 30th anniversary.

Principal Bill Hunt said the school was not showing its age because it had always been ahead of its time.

"In the '70s it was a fairly progressively designed school. We try and stay at the forefront of what is happening in education."

He said the almost 300 pupils represented the local community.

"It is a very multicultural group of children. There are probably not too many nationalities we do not have."

Mr Hunt is looking forward to the future of Movelle.

There are plans to adopt a play-based developmental curriculum, with a new indoor and outdoor learning area being built with a $500,000 grant from the State Government.

Mr Hunt would eventually like to have a parenting centre and kindergarten on the same site.

"The long term plan is for a one-stop educational precinct."

An ex-student and staff group at the former Sunshine West High School are planning a 50th anniversary next year.

The original school opened in 1960, with classes taught in church halls on what is now the Sunshine Secondary College West campus.

Celebrations will be held on October 23 next year. The group meets on the first Saturday of each month at the Polish Club on 19 Carrington Drive, Albion.
