School leader talks her way to award

03 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
MARIAN College student Elizabeth Vella has been selected as the Sunshine Lions Club 2009 youth of the year.

Students from Braybrook, Sunshine and Marian colleges took part in this year's event.

The local award is part of a quest to find the national Lions youth of the year. Ms Vella, a year 11 student, was overwhelmed to win the award.

"I think I won because I talked a lot in the interview and because of my leadership skills," she said.

The Deer Park resident is a keen netballer and coach and has a wide range of other interests.

At school she has been part of the liturgy committee as well as the justice and democracy forum. She has also been class captain and was recently elected school captain for next year.

Students competing in the Lions youth of the year competition are judged on their leadership, sporting and cultural activities and community involvement.

The judges assessed students on their public speaking ability before an audience of Lions club members, parents, teachers and fellow students.

Ms Vella will enter a regional final in early 2010, where she will compete against students representing other western suburbs Lions Clubs, with a chance to go on to the state and national finals.
