Panel of three to govern Scales prepares to hand over

03 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
A TEAM of three administrators could be running Brimbank Council within three weeks.

Current administrator Bill Scales chaired his last council meeting on Tuesday night and said his time was almost up. "It's probably less than three weeks. We just have to wait until the bill is passed through Parliament."

Mr Scales will stick around only long enough to hand over to the new team of administrators.

He said he had no idea who the three new administrators would be, as he had been kept out of the process. "[The Government] have been working on it for a while, so I'm sure they know who they will be appointing."

The Local Government (Brimbank City Council) Bill has been passed by the lower house and just needs the approval of the upper house. If everything goes to plan it should be enacted by November 17.

Mr Scales took over the Brimbank reins after the 11 councillors were suspended in September.

Dan Ward, a spokesman for Local Government Minister Richard Wynne, said the list was being finalised now and an announcement would be made once the bill was enacted.

"It will be a panel of three, with one chairperson," he said.

Mr Ward said the Government was looking for people with experience in governance, finance and planning.

"We are looking for the appropriate people, without an affiliation to a political party, so former politicians need not apply."

He was unsure how much the new administrators would be paid but said their wages would come out of the Brimbank Council budget.
